Prince Charles yesterday [22.11.] praised farmers for their hard work to protect the countryside as he opened the West's newest livestock market, and thanked them for their efforts despite the difficult times they faced with foot-and-mouth, BSE and falling meat prices. As he officially opened Cirencester Livestock Market in Gloucestershire, Charles said: "I try to make people understand what an important role people like you play.
If it was not for you, the British countryside would not look the way it does and the people that enjoy it would not still find it like it is." As well as opening the market at Fosse Farm, Driffield, the Prince tried his hand as an auctioneer as he directed the first three lots to be sold during yesterday's business and brought down the hammer on each deal.
